06 Feb Asseco has implemented an innovative system of payments for travels in Tychy
For the first time in Poland, public transport buses in Tychy have implemented a contactless payment card system in MTT model – the international standard for contactless payments in public transport. Asseco Data Systems has carried out the project within the frameworks of integration of the public transportation in Tychy with the system of the Silesian Card of Public Services (ŚKUP).
ŚKUP is a joint transportation project of the communes which are part of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolis. The City of Tychy was the last to join it, and Asseco Data Systems was responsible for the integration of public transport in Tychy with the ŚKUP system. A novelty is the possibility to pay for travel in vehicles with a use of a contactless payment card.
The whole process of purchasing a ticket with a payment card is performed electronically. The ticket-puncher does not print a payment confirmation or a ticket. During the control, you just need to show the card used for purchasing the ticket, as the new control terminals allow for verification of the completed transaction. If the passenger wants to make sure that it was successful, they can check it with the use of a reader. After the card is tapped, the information about the type and number of tickets purchased and their validity appears. A similar solution exists, for example, in London.
“We have implemented the new method of payment in buses in Tychy in MTT standard, the international standard for contactless payments in public transport. This is the first such project in Poland. When the payment card is held near the reader, the transaction is identified with a unique, encrypted token. The card then becomes a proof of acquiring the right to travel and in the case of ticket control, you just have to put it close to the control device. Settlement of payment for the travel takes place as a separate process at the end of the day. This gives additional possibilities to use algorithms to select the most advantageous tariff for the passenger. The solution has been certified by the international payment organizations Visa and Mastercard. The implementation in Tychy perfectly shows the potential of the ŚKUP service platform, where the most technologically advanced solution and convenient forms of payment for the travel were made available to passengers. The project itself, which for many reasons was quite a challenge, has been implemented perfectly – says Paweł Barnaś, Director of the Smart City Division at Asseco Data Systems, the contractor for the extension of the ŚKUP system.
Payment with contactless card is available in nearly 160 buses and trolley buses. Ultimately, it is to appear in all ŚKUP vehicles.
“Nowadays, contactless card payment is a standard and a great convenience for people who do not carry cash with them, and make practically all transactions with the use of a card. Now this will be possible in buses and trolley buses in Tychy. We want this to be a standard in our transport, therefore we are working on this solution in connection with the planned and global modernization of the ŚKUP system”. – said Jacek Brzezinka, Member of the Management Board of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis.
As part of the project, Asseco installed 190 computers and 560 ticket-punchers with card readers enabling EMV payment in MZK Tychy vehicles. 10 control devices supporting cards and control panels for drivers were also supplied. Also a data processing center operating in cloud computing was created.
